What is autism spectrum disorder? Autism spectrum disorder is a diagnosis which describes a group of individuals with a common cluster of symptoms, though it is important to note that the degree of severity of these symptoms vary greatly amongst individuals (Speaks, 2011). Autism is a lifelong developmental disorder affecting our communication, our interactions, and processing abilities which co-occur with motor coordination, attention, and physical health conditions which include but are not limited to irregular sleep behaviours and gastrointestinal disturbances (Speaks, 2011). Other traits which are inked to ASD include - Repetitive activities - Resistance to change in daily routines - Unusual responses to sensory stimuli such as touch - Inability to interact with the environment appropriately. Some individuals with ASD appear to excel in areas of visual skills, arithmetic, art, and music. Many believe that it is a disorder caused by genetic default, but in reality, its cause is mainly unknown. Just as we are able to conclude that there is no single type of autism, we are able to conclude that there is no single cause of autism, but the result of ASD is rather multifactorial i.e. a result of both environmental factors and autism risk genes which both influence neural development.
